The three contemporary icons I chose are the President, Dale Earnhardt JR, and Pop of any variety. The first chosen icon is the President of the United States. People have multiple feelings about President, and is being voted into office stood for many different things to many different people, but for me he represented hope, power, vision, and clarity. I truly see him as a person who desires greatness for this country, and for every person in the world.
Next I chose Dale Earnhardt JR because he has one of the biggest followings in Nascar yet he does not perform well, or has not performed well at his sport in quite some time. His following of fans seem to stay by his side regardless if he wins, or losses. Most athletes do not experience this type of loyalty, but Dale JR faced a great deal of hardship in his life, and I believe that is why his fans are extremely loyal to him, and stay with him through everything. This type of undying loyalty is why I chose Dale JR it does not seem to be a constant in our current times that people show compassion for one another, but I believe the fans of Dale JR give him their loyalty because of their compassion for his life.
Lastly I picked pop for many reasons, but primarily because of the generation that I am in. Everyone I know drinks pop all day long. There is no nutritional value in pop, and can be very bad for you yet so many people drink so much of it. In a culture that is banning many things that are bad for you I believe that pop will be next on the table for either higher sales taxes (which are already higher than typical sales taxes), or banned period.
All three of the icons I chose stand for major beliefs that I have. The first being that I believe that the people of the United States should judge individuals based on who they are, what they want, and what they do. The second is my desire for humans to show each other compassion. Lastly I do not think that governments should allow products to be made, purchased, and desired that they then turn around and charge you for wanting, or take away from you in the future.
Although, I am not a nascar fan, I did like your icons. I would have never thought of pop as an icon. You are right, though. It is very popular. I must admit, I have quite a lot of it myself everyday.
ReplyDeleteI try not to discuss politics too much. Everyone has an opinion. Some disagree and that starts arguement. I agree with him representing hope and change. The downfall to being president, though, is that once you are in office, you pretty much get the blame for everything that goes wrong.
I really liked your icons. Especially the one on pop. I have a daughter that is 23 and to this day has never touched pop. She was six years old and went into the hospital with the flu and was dehydrated and they wanted her to drink pop and the first words were that I will not and never drink pop. She played softball for Bluffton University and her first coach said that there will be no pop on the field or in the dugout that did not bother her.
ReplyDeleteFor your other two icons I am not a race fan but I do remember that Earnhart was a great racer. And for the President, he had a mess when he took this job and I knew it was going to be hard to get this country out of what mess we are in.
Great blog.
Nicole, and Cindy thank you for your time and attention. I appreciate your thoughts and comments. I have a hard time with popular culture because I typically do not fall into normal stereotypical cultural behavior so I rely on things that I find through objectivity. My husband would say it is because I am cheap, but hey I have to be with three kids, and a full time student load!:) So what I chose for the icons came from what I see other people doing, or liking around me. Pop, and Dale JR is my husband, and the President is my own personal true icon.
ReplyDeleteHi Shelby,
ReplyDeleteI found your choice of icons interesting; especially that of Dale Earnhardt Jr. I am not a racing fan either and do not know much about him. However, it goes to show that once one is placed upon a pedestal, faults and imperfections are pushed aside; at least for a little while.
Thanks,

I know I am odd because I have never really cared for the taste of pop, but everyone else around me seems to guzzle the stuff as though it is the nectar of the gods. Also I always know weather I am speaking with another person from the north when I hear pop instead of soda, soda sounds so strange to Ie.
ReplyDeleteNicole, that is so funny I never really thought about the word pop verses soda, but you are right!:) It is amazing how different people can be based on the culture in which they live! Thank you for your post.
